Hello folks i have a question for you.
Gas furnace attic insulation.
One of the latest talking points in this area is the installation of a furnace in the attic.
The house that i bought has two gas furnaces one for the basement and main level and another in the attic for the upper level don t ask me that its just how it is i live in minnesota and this is my 3rd winter in this house we have had a few small.
In this case the b vent was also dented on the side so i know the airspace around the double wall pipe was compromised.
Nothing unusual about that.
The burner flame may also be adjusted to improve flue gas carbon.
Earlier this year i got a question about a home that had spray foam insulation in the attic.
Attic insulation is performed by either blowing loose fill insulation onto the attic floor or installing insulation batts and blankets.
Natural gas is cost effective.
Otherwise for best energy efficiency and cost effectiveness insulation should fully cover the floor joists and be evenly distributed across the span of the attic.
The gas furnace was in a garage and the flue pipe went up through the above attic.
The sealed combustion appliance costs slightly more than the atmospherically vented type.
Most often the attic is sealed by installing spray foam insulation at the roofline thus bringing the attic inside the building enclosure and turning it into conditioned space directly or indirectly.
An atmospheric combustion furnace draws air from its immediate surroundings basement which in turn pulls the air from the rest of the house.
If you have used a 14 inch flashing around the vent pipe it should be easy to insulate to this level while still maintaining a 4 inch gap at the top.
A lot of builders and homeowners are going with spray foam insulation because of the airtightness benefits but then the questioner mentioned that the spray foam contractor had intentionally left big holes to the outside by not sealing the gable vents.
The recommended depth for attic insulation is usually 10 14 inches.
The insulation reduces the conductive heat loss from the living space into unconditioned space.
Make sure to leave 4 inches to the top of the dam insulation height should be lower than the dam.
Furnace clean and tune.
However these costs are offset by the energy savings achieved with the spf insulation.
This measure consists of cleaning the furnace burner ports orifice and venturi as necessary.
A furnace in the attic also costs less to install than other designs since the access point to it is usually through the roof.
Ideally i would want higher because i know that hspf usually drops as temperature drops.
When you have this unit in a space that you normally don t use then it creates more usable space in your living environment.
