The smell goes away after a day. Known as black algae or roof mold gloeocapsa magma is usually blamed on dirt accumulation mold and mildew or defective shingles. You will notice it coat the shingles black algae will appear as streaks on the roof where as green algae will form in more consistent coatings. The green color comes from chlorophyll which is the same substance that makes plants green.

The green and black algae in my opinion are not harmful to the actual roofing material because they do not develop roots. If you have green stains on your deck or siding it s probably due to either cholophyta algae green algae or a cyanobacterium related to gloeocapsa magma. Roof algae is not harmful or dangerous in itself but after a period of time the algae can cause the protective uv granules that cover roofing shingles to begin to come off eventually drying them out. As we said about green algae on roofs the presence of these black fungal or algal stains on the roof is sometimes an indicator that this roof area is in a shaded spot look for shade from trees or nearby buildings where you may want to be alert for development of moss or other roof problems but the level of damage from the black algae is probably low even less than that caused by lichens and certainly less than that caused by moss. The best stuff to take off the green scale is white distilled vinegar.

One of the many things that will infest cedar it typically grows on the end of the shakes. Fungus grows primarily on cedar shake roofs. The algae can cause black or gray streaks that seem to run down your roof. Should i avoid chlorine bleach.
